Food-grade nitrous oxide (E942) is safe when handled properly. It is also a pressurised gas, so it must be treated with respect. This page gives the core safety rules for professional users. It summarises — but does not replace — the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) supplied with every batch.
- What it is: nitrous oxide (N₂O), food additive E942, supplied as liquefied gas in pressurised cylinders.
- Classification: non-flammable gas, but an oxidiser — it can make other things burn faster. Transported under ADR rules as UN 1070.
- Food use only: our cylinders are certified food-grade. Never use industrial or automotive N₂O for food.
1. Upright and secured. Store cylinders standing up, secured so they cannot fall (chain, strap, or rack).
2. Cool. Keep below 50 °C. Never store in direct sun, next to ovens, or in hot vehicles.
3. Ventilated. Store in a well-ventilated space. In a sealed room, escaping gas can displace oxygen — this is the most serious storage risk. Never store in cellars or confined spaces without ventilation.
4. Away from flames and grease. No smoking, no open flames near storage. Keep valves free of oil and grease — N₂O is an oxidiser.
5. Commercial premises. Store at your registered commercial address, out of public reach, away from customer areas.
6. Check before use. Do not use a cylinder that is damaged, rusted, dented, or past its test date. Set it aside and contact us.
- Use only equipment designed for N₂O (pressure regulators, whipping equipment, dispensing systems rated for the cylinder pressure).
- Open valves slowly. Close them after use.
- Escaping gas is extremely cold and can cause cold burns — never point a valve at skin, and never touch frosted fittings with bare hands.
- Never heat a cylinder to increase flow.
- Never transfer gas between cylinders yourself.
- Train your staff. Keep the SDS where staff can find it.
Nitrous oxide must never be inhaled. Inhalation can cause loss of consciousness, oxygen starvation, nerve damage from repeated exposure, and death in confined spaces. It is also prohibited by our Intended Use Policy and, for recreational purposes, by Spanish law. If someone is unwell after exposure to the gas, move them to fresh air and call 112.
- Suspected leak: do not use flame to check. Ventilate the area, close the valve if safe, move people away.
- Fire near cylinders: evacuate and inform the fire service that pressurised oxidising gas cylinders are present.
- Emergency number in Spain: 112.
- Cylinders travel to you under ADR-compliant transport arranged by us.
- If you move cylinders yourself between your own premises: secure them upright, ventilate the vehicle, and never leave them in a hot parked vehicle.
- Empty cylinders: follow the return/recycling instructions on your delivery note. Do not throw cylinders in general waste.
Every order ships with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Keep them on file — inspectors can ask for them, and they are your proof of food-grade supply.
